SP Energy Networks has announced a major £15 million investment programme to replace high voltage underground cables that run between the Lister Drive and Garston areas of Liverpool.
Working in coordination with Liverpool City Council, SP Energy Networks will use the opportunity to replace two major cables (with a combined length of over 18km), in a single project that also shortens the overall route to around 16km.
As a key component of Liverpool’s electrical infrastructure, the cables have helped to provide the city with an industry leading level of reliability for over 50 years. To ensure continued reliability, SP Energy Networks has taken the decision to replace the cables and aim to complete the full project by the Spring of 2015.
The project is being undertaken by SP Energy Networks’ principal contractor Iberdrola Engineering and Construction (IEC), who have been working closely with Liverpool City Council to minimise the disruption during the cable excavation and reinstatement works. The company is also actively working with the council to identify opportunities to coordinate this project with their Strategic Highway Network Investment programme.
