Liverpool’s work to tackle youth unemployment has been highlighted during a visit by the Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Liam Byrne MP.
Mr Byrne met apprentices working for the city council’s grounds maintenance joint venture partner Glendale as they tended St John’s Gardens at St George’s Hall.
Over the last five years, Glendale have introduced over 35 apprentices to the organisation and supported vulnerable groups including looked after children to access opportunities.
The city council is facilitating hundreds of other apprenticeships by offering funding subsidies to private sector organisations to create opportunities for young people to gain the skills to go on and compete for jobs.
