To mark a year of celebrations in Derry~Londonderry, the Northern Irish city honoured with the title of the first ever UK City of Culture for 2013, and to highlight a packed programme of upcoming cultural events, an interactive digital wall will be installed in Williamson Square on Friday (April 12) to give the crowds an exciting taste of things to come.
As Liverpool will no doubt be used to being in the spotlight, after being named the European Capital of Culture in 2008, we are also inviting the city’s limelight-lovers and budding entertainers to show off their skills on the day in front of our roving camera crew – whether they can sing, dance or impress with an extraordinary human feat! They can then see their efforts displayed on the big screen on the hour every hour.
The best performers will win the chance to perform on stage in front of thousands at one of UK City of Culture’s biggest highlight events of the year – Music City in June – in an all-inclusive trip to Derry.
We’re looking for your most LegenDerry performance so feel free to be as inventive as possible – this is your chance to amaze us with your talent and become a lasting part of the action. Don’t forget to tweet your friends using the hashtag #areyoulegenderry?
Liverpool will also play a valuable role in UK City of Culture with homegrown talent like Frank Cottrell-Boyce, ceremony writer for the London Olympics Games, staging one of our highlight events in Derry~Londonderry this year. Andy Burnham MP and Brookside producer Phil Redmond were also instrumental in creating the idea of UK City of Culture.
Claire McColgan MBE, non-executive board member of the Culture Company 2013, said: “After hosting a brilliant year as the European Capital of Culture here in Liverpool, I know firsthand just how exciting it is to see your city shine with pride, and I’m delighted to be involved now in the first ever UK City of Culture for Derry~Londonderry.
“Above all, 2013 will be a year of celebration for the city – of dance, music and fun – and we want the people of Liverpool to relive all the excitement from 2008 by discovering some of the many cultural highlights coming up in Derry~Londonderry and by showcasing their own talents with performances for our digital wall.”
