As Liverpool prepares to welcome Labour Party conference delegates, Council Leader, Cllr Liam Robinson, reflects on the importance of having Government ministers and Members of Parliament from across the country in the city…
It’s a huge honour to welcome the Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer, the Government, parliamentary party, trade unions and wider delegates to Liverpool for this year’s annual conference.
Not only does the conference generate an estimated £30 million for the local economy – money that flows to local businesses such as hotels, bars, restaurants and shops, helping support job. It is also, crucially, a chance to show off our amazing city, the progress we are making, and the opportunities that exist here for the Government to deliver on its central mission of growing the national economy.
From our bid for a new town with 10,000 homes in Liverpool North and the rebirth of Central Docks alongside the new Hill Dickinson stadium, through to our appointment of a development partner to create a new community on the former Festival Gardens site, we are a city teeming with opportunity and momentum.
Then we have our burgeoning Life Sciences sector, with five new businesses announced just last week for the Innovation Hub in the Knowledge Quarter, and work now under way at Paddington South, part-funded by the Government.
We are driving forward the creation of the first Grade A office accommodation in 16 years at Pall Mall, and a private-sector led development around King Edward Triangle, which could be a gamechanger for the city in the way that Liverpool ONE was.
Over the coming days, we will be working with Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram and partners in the public and private sector to showcase some of the innovative work happening locally, and look at how we can work together to create the conditions for jobs and opportunities to change peoples’ lives for the better.
