BLOG | ‘I Didn’t Just Find a Home, I Found a Family’: Liuda’s Story

When war broke out in Ukraine, Liuda’s life changed overnight. Forced to leave behind her home, career, and loved ones, she arrived in the UK uncertain about what lay ahead. But in Liverpool, something unexpected happened. A local family welcomed her into their home with open arms.

Liuda came to Liverpool through the Homes for Ukraine scheme, a national programme that enabled individuals and families in the UK to offer accommodation to Ukrainians displaced by the war. Her host provided her with a roof over her head and also created an environment of warmth, respect, and genuine connection.

In her own words, Liuda describes the welcome she received as “life-changing.” What began as an arrangement between strangers soon grew into something deeper: a sense of belonging, care, and shared humanity.

“In Liverpool, I found more than just safety. I found a space where I could rebuild, and where I could share the story of my country.”
 – Liuda

Liuda experience reflects the wider spirit of Liverpool, a city with a proud history of welcoming people from around the world. Her story is one of many being shared as part of Refugee Week 2025, under the theme: Community is Our Superpower.

This year, Liverpool City Council is celebrating the strength of people who have sought sanctuary here, and the everyday acts of kindness that help them feel at home.

Community doesn’t always come from big actions. Sometimes, it’s in the small things, a conversation, a meal, a moment of understanding.

There are many ways to support sanctuary seekers in Liverpool. From volunteering for our partner organisations like Sola Arts and 4 Wings  to sharing these stories, every act matters.
