Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet meets at the Town Hall on Friday 6 May.
This is where the most senior group of councillors come together to take important decisions, usually involving spending significant sums of money, or related to council services.
You may recall we recently moved to a monthly Cabinet cycle in April. However, the Cabinet do get together more frequently if reports need to be considered, and this is why they are meeting again this week.
The issues being considered relate to transport improvements, the council’s energy supply and planning for a major event.
What’s on the agenda?
1: A plan to accept funding for a number of transport related projects from the Government’s Levelling Up scheme, as part of £36 million of upgrades to the city’s roads over the next 12 months. Dale Street, Great Crosshall Street and Hunter Street will see improved cycle facilities, pedestrian space and crossing points. There are also plans for new cycle lanes on Chapel Street and the Dock Road to close gaps in the existing network, building on schemes elsewhere in the city such as the remodelling of The Strand (pictured below) and Lime Street.
It is also planned to make pedestrian and cycleway improvements in Ropewalks with new paving, seating, bike racks, bins and lighting. It is all part of our plan to create a sustainable transport network which promotes walking and cycling.

2: Migrating to a new electricity supplier for the council – Crown Commercial Services – while procurement gets under way for a new longer term electricity and gas deal. This is because our existing energy supplier, Scottish Power, is no longer supplying commercial customers, meaning a previous Cabinet decision to extend its contract cannot be implemented. We’ve all been hit by rises in energy prices, and the council is no different.
3: Plans to organise a large scale public event. This is an exempt report that will be discussed in private because it is commercially confidential. We’ll leave you guessing for now as to what it is, but rest assured we will be saying more about it shortly.
