A Civic reception is to be held at Liverpool Town Hall on Thursday 2 June for local boxers who took part in a televised WBC tournament in front of 20,000 fans at Goodison Park last Sunday.
Tony Bellew became the first Briton since Carl Froch to win a WBC title when he knocked out Illunga Makobu in the third round of his cruiserweight bout.
There was also success for Birkenhead’s Sean “Masher” Dodd, who beat Pasquale Di Dolvio on points to become the WBC International Lightweight champion.
And Stephen Smith reclaimed the WBC Silver International after stopping Daniel Brizuela in their silver superfeatherweight championship bout.
Meanwhile, Stephen’s brothers – Callum and Paul – won their respective fights against Cesar Hernan Reynoso and Bartlomiej Grafka.
The event also saw David Price making his heavyweight comeback after a year out of the ring, with a second round stoppage of Vaclaj Pejsar.
There were also victories for city boxers Tom Farrell and Gerard Carroll and Skelmerdale’s Steve Brogan.
It comes as Liam Smith prepares to defend his WBO super welter-weight title on Saturday 4 June at the ECHO Arena.
Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson said: “In a city which is football-mad, it is sometimes easy to overlook the tremendous achievements of people who are at the top of their game in other sports.
“In Liverpool right now we have some of the best boxers in the world – I call them the Liverpool Lions – who are doing us proud representing the city on a global stage.
“What we saw at Goodison Park last Sunday night was a fantastic showcase for Liverpool, beamed live on TV, and most of the bill was made up of local talent.
“I was lucky enough to be there myself in what was an electric atmosphere, and huge credit must go to Everton FC and Eddie Hearn from Matchroom.com for working to stage a hugely successful event.
“Hopefully it is something we can replicate at the city’s football stadia in the future, not just for boxing but other events as well.”
Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Roz Gladden, said: “The reception is our way of the city paying credit to these amazingly talented boxers.
“It is a hugely competitive sport and we are proud to have them representing Liverpool whenever they take to the ring.”
