Discussions over road safety following tragedy

Liverpool City Council is holding discussions with concerned local residents following the death of a six year old schoolboy in West Derby in a road accident.

Bobby Colleran, who attended Blackmoor Park Infants School on Leyfield Road, died following a collision with a van on Friday 24 October.

A petition has now been set up by people living in the area calling for additional road safety measures.

Councillor Malcolm Kennedy, Cabinet member for highways, said: “This was a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family of Bobby Colleran at this extremely difficult time.

“There is a full police investigation and inquest underway into the circumstances surrounding what happened. Although we can’t prejudge the outcome, it is important we listen to the views of local residents and we have already met with the organisers of the petition to hear and understand their concerns.

“There are already some road safety measures in place on this part of Leyfield Road including a partial 20mph speed limit and crossings outside the schools, but we have committed to looking at ways in which we can work together to further improve road safety in the area in the short and long term.”
