Engineers from United Utilities have managed to stabilise the city bound side of Edge Lane and with agreement from Liverpool City Council have lifted the road closure for traffic heading into Liverpool.
The outbound carriageway remains closed.
Motorists using Edge Lane heading into Liverpool during Friday morning rush hour will be able to use both lanes as normal.
Plans are still being reviewed into the possibility of creating a temporary contraflow, allowing one lane for each direction, while repairs take place on the damaged side of Edge Lane.
United Utilities wastewater strategy manager Tony Griffiths said: “It’s fantastic news we have been able to reopen the inbound carriageway of Edge Lane into Liverpool City Centre, which will ease some of the traffic disruption.”
“We’re reviewing with the Council what options are available which would allow us to set up an contraflow system to allow outbound traffic to share half of this carriageway.
“No decision on this has yet been made and we would ask all motorist heading out of Liverpool from the city centre to continue to use the temporary diversion route.”
Engineers continue to assess the situation, but have warned repair work on the outbound carriageway is likely to take weeks rather than days to fix.
