Everyman wins top award

The new Everyman in Liverpool has won the award for Best Public Service Building at the LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final – one of the most recognised events in the industry’s calendar.

A panel of industry experts judged a list of the highest quality projects from around England and Wales to reward the best in technical innovation, sustainability and design. The award was granted to the Everyman for its inclusive design and environmental credentials which include a BREEAM excellent rating. The new Everyman combines original features such as the basement bistro with new facilities including rehearsal and workshop spaces and dedicated facilities for working with young people and community groups. The beautiful façade, representing the people of Liverpool, promotes the role of the theatre for everyone in the local community.

LABC Chief Executive Paul Everall said: “This project shows how cooperation between the contractor and local authority building control can result in a building that far exceeds the original brief in scope and useability. Regular meetings and excellent communication ensured that challenging problems including maximising space and observing planning constraints on the height of the building were achieved without compromising on safety or design. The new Everyman will be vital in nurturing Liverpool’s creative talent and will provide entertainment to the local community for years to come.”

“Our building excellence awards are an opportunity for the trade to celebrate good practice. Our winners demonstrate how positive working relationships with local council building control teams achieve high quality, sustainable buildings. Our awards are unique because they recognise how this cooperation improves building standards and professionalism across the industry.”

Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said:  “I’m delighted the Everyman has scooped yet another well-deserved award.

“The restoration of this cultural jewel has received wide-ranging acclaim from industry experts right through to first time and regular visitors who are wowed by the combination of original features and state of the art technology.”

The LABC Building Excellence Awards Grand Final took place on Tuesday 11 November 2014 at the Brewery in London and was hosted by writer, architect and television presenter, George Clarke.
