Flying the flag for suffragettes

To celebrate Pankhurst Day (Saturday 14 July) and a 100 years of partial women’s votes, Liverpool City Council have been working with HM Revenue and Customs to raise the suffragette flag from Cunard Building on Friday 13 July.

Over the weekend, the Cunard Building, Liverpool Town Hall and St. George’s Hall will also be lit up in the suffragette colours, purple, white and green, to celebrate the occasion.

Deputy Mayor and Cabinet member for Culture Tourism & Events Liverpool, Cllr Wendy Simon said;

‘Raising the flag to celebrate Pankhurst Day is something we’re really proud of and Liverpool City Council is made up of 55% women that have been elected into post.

The 100th anniversary of some women getting the right to vote is something that we’re proud to celebrate, but it’s also a reminder of how far we still have to go to achieve true equality and diversity.’
