Former Lord Mayor’s fund helps the homeless

Former Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Gary Millar will make a donation from his charity fund to the Whitechapel Centre this week in order to help the homelessness this winter.

On Friday 17 October, Cabinet member for business and enterprise, Councillor Gary Millar will meet representatives from the Whitechapel Centre at Liverpool Town Hall to present them with a cheque which will enable them to help even more people in need of shelter during the winter months.

Councillor Millar said: “As one of my charities last year, homelessness is an issue that is very close to my heart, it is something that could affect any one of us at any time so it is vital that we do everything we can to ensure this happens less and less.”

David Carter, Chief Executive of the Whitechapel Centre said: “We are so thrilled to be a beneficiary of the Lord Mayor’s Appeal. The financial donation will help us ensure more people in Liverpool can find and keep a place they can call home. In addition, the year-long involvement with the Appeal has introduced our work to a much wider audience around the city. We have seen an overall rise in the number of people, organisations and companies who support us and this is in no small part due the fantastic effort that Gary and Steve made. We are very grateful to them, the fundraising committee and everyone who supported the Appeal.”

Pat, a volunteer at the centre met with Councillor Millar during his term as Lord Mayor, she said: “We really enjoyed it when the Lord Mayor visited the centre. He sat down and talked to people and listened to their stories. The centre is open every day of the year and needs help and donations to keep it running. It has been great to see so much support for Whitechapel.”
