Local recycling and waste officers are encouraging green-fingered residents to get in their gardens for a springtime clean up this April.
And to help, from 5th April, Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority (MRWA) and Veolia Environmental Services are giving away 5,000 green waste heavy duty bags at five local Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs):
• Otterspool (Jericho Lane, Liverpool L17 5AR)
• Clatterbridge (Mount Road, Clatterbridge CH63 6JE)
• Huyton (Wilson Road, Huyton L36 6AD)
• Ravenhead (Burtonhead Road, St Helens WA9 5EA)
• Southport (Foul Lane, Scarisbrick New Road, Southport PR9 7RG)
To get a bag all that residents need to do is drop off a load of green/garden waste at any one of the Recycling Centres, where they will be entitled to swap it for a free bag which can be taken there and then.
Graham Morgan, Chairperson of MRWA, said: “Our recycling bag giveaways are always really popular with local residents and they encourage people to bring us waste that maybe they normally wouldn’t. The bags are sturdy, long-lasting sacks which can be used repeatedly, and will save people having to use plastic bin bags which are in the main used only once before being discarded, ending up in a landfill site.”
Recycling Centre green waste skips accept grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, garden prunings, leaves and twigs, woody waste, dead plants, branches, and pond and vase plants.
Alex Paterson, Director of Veolia Environmental Services Merseyside & Halton, said: “The green bag giveaway has been successful in recent years across Merseyside, which has given us an ideal platform to focus on increasing green waste recycling. We look forward to supporting MRWA with the scheme and also hearing the positive responses from our site users.”
Most of Merseyside’s Recycling Centres are open twelve hours a day in the summer – 8.00am until 8.00pm, seven days a week. The Centres accept all sorts of household materials for recycling, from batteries, cans and cardboard, through to garden clippings, glass bottles, furniture, soil, timber, electrical items and white goods, plus much more.
Carl Beer, Chief Executive of MRWA, said: “Hopefully this giveaway will encourage local residents to give us a bumper load of green and garden waste this summer, which will go on to be composted.”
