Public health officials are asking whether you “Know your Numbers”.
High blood pressure rarely has any symptoms, but if left untreated can lead to a heart attack or stroke. The question is part of the annual blood pressure awareness campaign to encourage people to get checked, because this is the only way to know if it is high.
The NHS advice is to have a blood pressure check every five years.
Blood pressure is considered high if the reading is above 140/90, or above 150/90 if you are over 80 years of age. If you have a diagnosis of high blood pressure (hypertension), then the advice is to check more frequently as directed by your GP.
The campaign is in its 25th year, and this year’s theme is “find the missing millions” – there are an estimated 47,000 people in Liverpool alone that are unaware they have high blood pressure.
