Liverpool declares climate change emergency

Liverpool has declared that the planet earth is facing a Climate Change Emergency.

At a special full council meeting in Liverpool Town Hall, Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson led a debate on the impending global ecological disaster and called on all political parties to come together to rise to the challenge of making Liverpool a net zero carbon city by 2030.

Last night’s debate was captured live and can be revisited here: http://liverpool.gov.uk/climateaction

The full council voted unanimously to declare the emergency, with the declaration formally signed by the Mayor and party leaders, and to establish a Climate Change Select Committee to look at four key themes:

  • Transport and Air Quality
  • Buildings and the Built Environment
  • Waste, Recycling and Energy
  • Low Carbon Economy

Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins was also appointed Cabinet Member for Environment and Sustainability.
