Be prepared to revisit the history of Liverpool as a brand new theatrical heritage experience has taken to the streets of our much-loved city, having been devised by the creative talents at Lovehistory, the authority on bringing history to life. The Real Ale Pub Tour will revisit the maritime history of Victorian Liverpool and some of the city’s favourite historic real ale pubs where the finest handpicked ales are waiting to be savoured.

The Real Ale Pub Tour takes audiences back to Liverpool’s hey day as a famous seafaring port where the buzz and energy of young sailors perfumed the air. As the new world opened up, so did new possibilities and sailors propelled the cultural revolution of the early twentieth century. Through their travels to faraway lands, sailors would return with new forms of art, music, dance, fashion as well as compelling tales from foreign shores.

Beginning at Liverpool’s famous Pig & Whistle and led by an authentic Sea Captain, visitors will traverse through the founding streets of Liverpool, tracing the path walked by their ancestors to the city’s most established public houses including. The tour then visits Ye Old Hole in Ye Wall, Liverpool’s oldest public house, Thomas Rigby and The Ship and Mitre. The walls of these long standing ale ‘ouses have a tale to tell and Lovehistory’s very own Sea Captain will recount these tales and along the way there will be traditional Scouse sea shanties including Liverpool Judie’s, Leaving of Liverpool and Maggie May. This exciting expedition ends under the ancient archway of Doctor Duncan’s, situated just a stone’s throw away from the iconic St. Georges Hall. Just make sure to keep a look out for the famous, or infamous, Liverpool Judie’s who might just be lurking around the corner!

Other tours available include ‘A Tale of Two Cities Tour’ which presents Liverpool as a city of contrasts and reveals how a quaint fishing village nestled on the banks of the River Mersey became the second city of the British Empire. This enjoyable, revealing and fun experience traces Liverpool’s past through close encounters with the characters and figures that have shaped our city and our identity including the old fish wives of Formby…they may be tough as old boots and they certainly aren’t afraid to speak their mind!

This tour begins at Liverpool’s famous Town Hall, visitors will be led through seven of the city’s original streets, meticulously tracing the path walked by their ancestors. Groups are guided around Liverpool’s earliest streets and ancient medieval hotspots including Hackins Hay, burial ground for our Quaker ancestors, Leather Lane, Dale Street, Victoria Street, William Brown Street; all of these streets have a tale to tell and Lovehistory leave no stone unturned in order to unravel these lost tales. Each exciting expedition ends in spectacular fashion on the steps of the iconic St George’s Hall, a destination that has provided the city with a collective space for celebration, for mourning, for protesting and for remembering.
