Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson has been nominated as World Mayor 2014.
The Prize is awarded by the philanthropic City Mayors Foundation every two years to a mayor who has made outstanding contributions to his or her community and has developed a vision for urban living and working that is relevant to towns and cities across the world.
Previous winners and runners-up include the mayors of Bilbao, Perth, Mexico City, Oklahoma City, Cape Town, Zurich, Melbourne, Amsterdam, Athens, Mississauga and Tirana.
Mayor Anderson said: “The work I do as Mayor is not in order to be nominated for awards but to try and improve the lives of Liverpool people especially in these difficult financial times. However, I am very humbled to have been nominated for a worldwide honour.”
A shortlist of 25 nominees will be announced in early June 2014 and a second round of voting will take place between June and October. The winner of the 2014 World
Mayor Prize and other results of the World Mayor Project will be declared in January 2015. The winner receives the artistically acclaimed World Mayor trophy, while the runner-up is given the World Mayor Commendation.
