Liverpool Arab Arts Festival presents a special event this Saturday 31 May. Lodge Lane will play host to an eclectic array of bands and performances throughout the afternoon, showcasing a taste of world music from the Middle East, highlighting what visitors can expect when the festival returns for 2014 which runs Saturday 7 – Sunday 15 June.
Bringing the Samba beats to the street is the highly celebrated percussion Samba Reggae band Batala whose performances are known to be energetic, boisterous and colourful. The group perform regularly across the UK and the World at a wide variety of events such as the famous Salvador Carnival in Brazil, at major sports arena’s in the UK, as well as supporting local village parades and charities.
Next up is The Rojeeh Band; a group of young male and female artists interested in arts and all its forms, the Rojeeh Band perform in Arabic, Kurdish and Turkish using string instruments and drums. They also present folkloric dance and solo performances by band members.
Completing the line-up is Yemeni Musical Entertainment Group. The 7-piece bands members all come from different parts of Yemen and consist of singer (Mohamed Hassan) with accompaniment along with combinations of voice & oud, drums and percussion instruments to highlight the rhythms in subtly expressive ways. The audience will be afforded a taste of live traditional Yemeni music from different regions in Yemen.
Radio Beirut will also be bringing a taste of the upcoming festival by streaming music and events live from Liverpool to Beirut.
Coinciding with International Festival of Business 2014, LAAF is in partnership with Liverpool Arabic Centre, Liverpool City Council and the Greenhouse project.
Cabinet member for Culture and Tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon said: “The event on Saturday will be a great opportunity for people to get a taste of what will be on offer in June as part of the Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival.
“It is an ideal time for families and individuals to get out in their local community and get involved in this fantastic event. I would urge as many people as possible to head along to Lodge Lane on Saturday and take part in this fantastic and fun day.”
This event marks the fantastic start to this year’s highly anticipated festival, celebrating the very best of Arab arts and culture. Boasting a huge range of events, the 9 day long festival will cover a plethora of cultural mediums and genres, with family activities, visual arts, film, performance, music, dance, food, 2 book launches and interactive workshops. People of all ages and cultures will find something to interest them.
