New councillors join Cabinet

Leader of Liverpool City Council, Cllr Liam Robinson, has announced two new Councillors will be joining the Cabinet.

He made the announcement at last night’s Annual General Council Meeting.

Cllr Jo Kennedy has been appointed Cabinet Member for Employment, Educational Attainment and Skills.

Cllr Hetty Wood has been appointed Cabinet Member for Housing.

Cllr Liam Robinson said: “I’m really pleased to welcome Hetty and Jo to the Cabinet, they both bring incredible experience and energy to their respective roles.

“We have lots of exciting plans for the next couple of years, whether that be our plans to build 8,000 homes in the city by 2027 or our plans to open new schools in the city, such as the new Princes Primary School. They will play a key role in how we deliver on these pledges.”

He also said: “I want to extend my thanks to Sam and Lila for their hard work over the past couple of years. I’m really proud of what we have achieved together, from the investment into our homelessness services to the delivery of our family hubs across the city.”

Outgoing Cabinet member for Housing, Cllr Sam East said: “Last year I was asked to join Cabinet on an interim basis with oversight of our housing and homelessness portfolio.

I’m really pleased with our progress over the last 12 months. We have a strong team of permanent senior officers with strategic grip of the issues we pledged to deliver on. Our Housing Strategy is approved, we are making good progress towards delivering thousands of new homes and crucially we have delivered millions of pounds of new investment into our homelessness service.

“We are in the process of hiring dozens of new staff into the Housing Solutions team where they will deliver on the key ambition of our new Homelessness Strategy: to make homelessness rare, brief and non-recurring.

“In accordance with my plan to serve for one year, I will now be stepping down, as increased responsibility in my work and personal life demands more of my time.

“I wish my successor, Cllr Hetty Wood, every success and want to express my huge thanks to Cllr Julie Fadden who has been invaluable as Assistant Cabinet Member through my time in the role.”

Outgoing Cabinet member for Employment, Educational Attainment and Skills, Cllr Lila Bennett said: “It has been a real honour to serve as Cabinet Member for Employment, Educational Attainment and Skills since May 2023.

“I’m really proud of what we have delivered so far, including the delivery of five family hubs in Clubmoor, Speke, Vauxhall, Picton and Granby.

“I am confident that Cllr Jo Kennedy will work hard in the role to deliver for our children and young people.”

“Over the Christmas period I made the difficult decision to step back from my Cabinet role. I have made this decision so I can spend more time taking care of my grandchildren. I remained committed to working diligently for the residents of Croxteth Country Park as a ward councillor.”
