Newsham Park cricket bonanza

Staff from Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service are taking part in a cricket match and staging other activities at a free event on Saturday, September 8.

The Newsham Park Cricket Club event in Newsham Park , Liverpool , runs from 11am to around 4pm.

There will be junior cricket activities, for young people who are 6-years-old and older, and coaching sessions between 11am and 1pm on the day as well as music including a gospel choir and the Sea Cadets from West Derby and the Liverpool Model Boat Club.

Group Manager Gary Oakford, who heads up the Fire Fit programme at Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service, said: “One of the aims of this open day event is to highlight Fire Fit, to encourage more young people to become active in our communities and build on the links already in place between Kensington Community Fire Station, Fire Fit, the members of Merseyside Fire & Rescue service cricket team and the local communities where our firefighters are based. We welcome this opportunity to be working with Newsham Park Cricket Club in furthering that aim. It should be a great day out for the family and young people.”

The ECB ( England and Wales Cricket Board) Cricket Factory Road Show has also given a Cricket Factory Core Skills Set to the Newsham Park Cricket Club, which will also be used at the event for juniors. The Cricket Factory equipment allows participants of all ages and all abilities to perform a variety of cricket activities and challenge all the key skills: batting, bowling, throwing, catching and cricket related movements

Pamela Boardman, Chair of Newsham Park Cricket Club, said: “There will not only be cricket coaching for young people on the day but other activities and community interest groups at the event. From 2pm on the day there is a senior 20/20 cricket match between Newsham Park Cricket Club and the Merseyside Fire & Rescue service cricket team. I would like to thank all of those who have contributed and helped to stage this event. It should be a superb event and day out for people.

“There will be demonstration sessions for youngsters and others that they can join in throughout the morning.

“Experienced and inexperienced junior and senior cricket players are very welcome to join us at our cricket club on Tuesdays at 6pm for seniors and Wednesdays at 6pm for juniors. More information can be obtained by emailing npcc1895@gmail.com
