Queens Drive barriers now installed after flooding

Queens Drive reopened after flooding repairs

Queens Drive has reopened to traffic today – Monday 19, August.

The road has been closed since Tuesday, 9 July after heavy rain and flooding under the railway bridge between Dovedale Road and North Mossley Hill Road.

United Utilities has been working with Liverpool City Council to investigate the causes of the flooding and geotechnical experts have taken core samples from beneath the carriageway and installed monitoring equipment to assess the impact of groundwater.

The groundwater monitoring and investigations will continue into the autumn.

United Utilities completed repairs to the carriageway and pavement and handed the road back to Liverpool City Council on Friday, 16 August, for final checks.

The road was first closed last August when Elaine and Philip Marco tragically died after their car became submerged in flood water.

Since then substantial work has been undertaken to renew the gullies, remove and thin shrubbery on the embankments and undertake significant footway and carriageway repairs caused by the flooding.

Sensors have been fitted to the roadside gullies to monitor their operation, and also to an adjacent wall, which will alert the Council of any flooding.

Electronic signs have also been installed which will warn motorists of any impending flooding and road closure, with an automatic barrier fitted to close off access.
