Pupils from Hunts Cross Primary School are helping to make their local train station bloom!
Hunts Cross Primary School, Merseyrail, Merseytravel and Network Rail have been working with local Councillors Rachael O’Byrne and Sharon Connor to brighten up Hunts Cross Train Station.
As part of the project Hunts Cross Primary School visited the award winning Dutch Farm in April to learn about planting flowers, vegetables and fruits. This week the school has been helping to plant their own vegetables and herbs in boxes on the station so commuters will be able to help themselves to fresh produce on their way home.
Councillor Rachael O’Byrne said “It’s been brilliant to be involved in this project because not only are we teaching children about healthy eating and gardening we are also brightening up our station with fresh herbs and vegetables that the whole community can use- it’s all part of our work to make our area cleaner and greener!
“I would like to say a big thank you to Hunts Cross Primary School pupils and staff, Merseyrail, Merseytravel as well as Network Rail for all their support.”
Sally Ralston Merseyrail’s Corporate Social Responsibility Manager said “Working closely with the communities around our stations is very important to us. We were delighted when Councillor O’Byrne contacted us to initiate the new adoption scheme at Hunts Cross station. We hope that the scheme will build a long lasting partnership with community, the school and Merseyrail. We look forward to working with them on engaging and exciting projects in the future.”
Work has also been undertaken by Merseyrail to clean the footbridge that leads to the platform and re-paint the handrails, work has also been done on re-painting the stand to the electronic departures board.
Network Rail have also committed to re-painting the pedestrian side of the Bridge on Speke Road as part of their maintenance project and work will commence shortly.
Councillor Sharon Connor said “We are delighted that after meeting with Network Rail to raise our concerns about the appearance of their bridge on Speke Road they have agreed to re-paint it ahead of their planned maintenance schedule, we know this will have a positive impact on our community and can’t wait for work to begin!”
