School pupils get a taste of Peking Opera

One hundred and fifty Liverpool school children are going to the Opera, courtesy of Mayor Joe Anderson.

The Mayor’s Fund is providing tickets for secondary school pupils to attend a performance of the Warrior Women of Yang by The China National Peking Opera Company at the ECHO Arena on Friday 13 November.

It is a prestigious cultural event as Liverpool is one of only two venues in the UK being visited by the Opera Company, with the other being Sadlers Wells.

Councillor Nick Small, Cabinet member for education, said: “It is really important that our young people get the chance to experience a wide variety of cultural events, and this performance will be something really special.

“It is extremely rare to see the fine art of Peking opera in this country, and a privilege that they have chosen Liverpool as one of the places to perform this spectacular show.”

The Warrior Women of Yang, is a story of grief, courage, patriotism and family loyalty. A cast of over fifty perform music, song, mime, with exquisite costumes, painted faces and amazing stage combat and acrobatics.
