A reminder of the support services available following the death of The Vivienne

Following the tragic death of James Lee Williams, known professionally as drag icon The Vivienne, Liverpool City Council encourages residents affected by the news to make the most of the support services available.

Liverpool’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle said:

“The Vivienne’s passing has shocked the LGBTQ+ community and it feels like a real, personal loss to so many.

“They were a powerhouse both on and off screen – funny and unapologetically authentic. On stage and TV, they dazzled with quick wit, sharp talent and larger-than-life charisma that captivated audiences worldwide.

“I was lucky enough to meet James and they were warm, generous and committed to dedicating their time to working with and supporting our local communities. And of course, they were a fantastic ambassador for our Eurovision host city programme in 2023.

“Following the sad announcement on Sunday, tributes have been posted from across the world, which I hope brings some comfort to James’ family and friends and showcases how they were respected and loved.  A vigil on Sunday will offer time and space for us to remember, celebrate and honour the legacy of James and The Vivienne.

“For anyone struggling with this news, we urge them to reach out for help – whether that be via the incredible work of Sahir House – or one of the many mental health support groups available.”
