Triathlon returns for 2014

Triathlete queen and 2012 Olympian Lucy Hall joined Everton FC legend Duncan Ferguson, MP Steve Rotheram and Hollyoaks actor James Sutton to launch Liverpool’s triathlon event “Tri Liverpool”, taking place on the 10th August at the Echo Arena.

The launch, which took place at the Echo Arena, saw the celebrities pick up some top triathlon tips from Lucy Hall, and local triathlon club Mersey Tri, who participated in an exclusive demonstration which included a swim in the Wapping Docks.

Speaking at the event, Everton Football Club’s 1st team coach Duncan Ferguson, an ambassador for Official Charity Partner Everton in the Community, said: “This is a great opportunity for Evertonians to take on a challenge and raise vital funds for Everton in the Community. Despite what you might think, triathlon isn’t just a sport for really fit people, in fact pretty much anyone can take part. If any Everton fans out there are up for a challenge, then this is the event for you! Even if you don’t want to do the whole thing, then why not make it a team event and do the team relay with a few friends?”

MP Steve Rotherham said “Tri Liverpool is a fantastic event for the city. Renowned for its appetite for sport and its competitive spirit, this event presents an opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to do something amazing this summer and ‘be a triathlete’. What better way to get fit and healthy! I’ll be taking part in a team with MP Andy Burnham and we’re both looking forward to the event on August 10th. If you’re thinking about it, my advice would be to go for it!”

Olympian and current ITU World Triathlon Series triathlete Lucy Hall said: “Tri Liverpool is a stunning triathlon with a brilliant venue – the Echo Arena. Triathlon isn’t as hard as many people think it is! All you need to do is a bit of training and have a bike, some trainers and a wetsuit and you’ll be fine. A word of warning though, it can be addictive!”

Hollyoaks actor James Sutton, who’s taking part in the team relay event on the 10th August, said: “I’m really looking forward to taking part in the triathlon with Team Hollyoaks. It’s a great event for the city of Liverpool and I’d encourage anyone to get involved on 10th August regardless of how fit you are. If I can do it, anyone can.”

Assistant Mayor, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “We’re delighted to be supporting the 2014 Tri Liverpool event.  Liverpool is a city with a growing reputation for staging major international events and I am sure that the triathlon will be a huge success and create real excitement in the city.”

Based in the heart of the Liverpool Docks, Tri Liverpool is arguably the most spectacular city-based triathlon in the UK. On August 10th, over 2,000 triathletes will swim in the Wapping Docks, bike past the iconic Liver Buildings and run along the Albert Docks before collecting their medal outside the impressive Echo Arena.

Distances start from as little as a 750m swim, 20km bike and a 5k run. If participants don’t feel ready to do the whole thing, they can team up with two friends and take part as a team – one person swims, one person cycles, one person runs and then they all cross the finish line together!
