From pop-inspired perms to DJ masterclasses, classic cars and graffiti workshops to learning the Lindy hop, Albert Dock Liverpool today reveals an eclectic programme for its Vintage on the Dock event – coming to Albert Dock on July 9 and 10 – a jam-packed weekend celebration of 20th Century vintage cool at the North West’s most visited tourist attraction.
The brainchild of world-renowned designers, Wayne and Gerardine Hemingway MBE, and son Jack, Vintage on the Dock will bring music, fashion and culture from yesteryear to Liverpool’s Albert Dock for a free, summer event for the whole family to enjoy. Vintage on the Dock is part of Albert Dock’s 175 strategy.
Wayne Hemingway MBE, said: “It’s not long to go now until we arrive in Liverpool for Vintage on the Dock and we are very excited with this year’s programme which really does have something for everyone to enjoy. We love the idea that an event of this scale can have so much totally FREE content and be in such a brilliantly accessible location.”

Vintage marketplace
Visitors looking for some seriously stylish eye candy can browse the vintage marketplace, with the best traders hand-selected by keen-eyed curators, Dotty’s Vintage. From vintage clothes and accessories, to mid-century modern homewares, records and music memorabilia from the 1920s through to the 1990s, the vintage marketplace is a treat to behold.
- Retro Bazaar specialise in restoring vintage technology for today’s gadget lovers – look out for record players, phones, and radiograms adapted to play mp3s
- Nick Reed & Lady Jane‘s Vintage Bandwagon sells original vintage film, music and art gallery posters, particularly those from late 60s and early 70s, alongside handpicked 70s clothing including Biba and Ossie Clark
- Liverpool-based Bijou & Vintage sells women’s clothes and accessories including bridal wear
- Bessie B Vintage specialise in mid-century hats and handbags and also sell some clothing from the 40s to the 60s
- Out Of The Past trades menswear and accessories so something for the gentlemen out there
Classic car show
A visually stunning selection of classic cars are travelling to the Dock from all over the country for both days, taking visitors on a journey that celebrates timeless vintage automotive design.
Look out for British made vehicles such as a 1969 Rolls Royce Silver Shadow and a Bentley S1 Continental, not forgetting a 1965 Lambretta Golden Special with mirrors galore! You’ll also spot a fully customised 1949 Chevrolet Styleline, an American showstopper that starred in the hit film, Grease!
Vintage workshops
At Vintage on the Dock we take a sense of wartime make-do-and-mend austerity and apply it to a modern sense of sustainability and respect for the environment. Learn a new skill or revive an old one with expert tutors and stitch and sew masters on hand.
- Vintage letterpress drop in workshop – Get your hands inky and print using traditional wood type, learning the ropes of vintage letterpress printing with Jacqui Sharples of Print for Love of Wood. Take home a wood type poster for just £5; free postcard printing
- DIY fabric printing workshop inspired by Francis Bacon: Invisible Rooms exhibition at Tate Liverpool. Join Sufea Mohamad Noor for a DIY fabric printing workshop using everyday objects. Make your own hand printed fabrics using bubble wraps, lolly sticks and the humble potato among many other things you can find around the house. Create geometric patterns and block of colours inspired by the cages and jewel-like colour pallet that Bacon used in his paintings – free
- Graffiti workshop with Faunagraphic – learn the art of graffiti and create your own artwork in vibrant colours with the amazing graffiti and mural artist, Faunagraphic, who paints her environmentally inspired works on walls all over the world – £7.50. Booking is required
Salthouse Dock Yard
Relax in Salthouse Dock with a cool drink, delicious food, and music courtesy of our vintage DJs. From meats to cakes, enjoy a spot of vintage lunch, and then round off the day with tea at one of Albert Dock’s popular restaurants.
Live music
At PANAM, enjoy the sounds of funk and soul with New Power Soul Club (Saturday only) and bop along to the rockabilly sounds of The Swinging Bricks (Sunday only). Take a trip down memory lane with the Mersey Belles, who infuse the ukulele with fabulous renditions of all the old classics from the 20s to the 50s, while making songs from the 21st century sound even better than they do on the wireless (Ziferblat, Sunday only) – 8 pence per minute.
Entertainment
- From the Beatles Story to Tate Liverpool, show-stopping street performances will weave their way through the famed cobbled quaysides of Albert Dock, including classic jazz dances from the 20s and 30s – including the Lindy Hop courtesy of The Mudflappers; and pop-up Charleston from Anthony and Steph
- Total Eclipse of the Head mobile hair salon in a caravan – be it The Kate Bush Bush, the 80’s Power Mullet Montage or the Crimping Back to the 90s, choose your music-themed hairstyle and stand out from the crowds
- Join the People’s Party of Liverpool and learn to DJ from the groovy Charity Shop DJ. Charity Shop DJ are bringing their portable turntable to Albert Dock and they need you to help their all-day party go with a swing. Flick through the vintage vinyl collection – and even take a turn on the decks yourself
- Meet Gary ‘Gacko‘ Bridgens – the Royal Troubadour of Piel Island, and his peripatetic perambulator of performance, Dolly, unloading his curious cargo of songs, stories and routines as this wandering vagabond explores Albert Dock (Sunday only)
And if that wasn’t enough – explore the How Brave is the Wren travelling bookshop (Sunday only), play dress-up in the Chase the Sun Pop-up Photobooth, delight the kids at Horse Box Face Painting, and receive a professional vintage hairdo at the Russell & Brown Vintage Hair Salon (full price) at PANAM.
There’s also the Best in Show, as our beady-eyed style spotters will be out in the crowds looking for the finest examples of vintage glamour and head-turning flair to appear in the parade, with rewards for those who look quite simply, fabulous!
