Following the smash hit sell-out success of the first ever Cancer Research UK Winter Run in 2015, which was famous for its Polar Bear hugs and winter fun – this unique 10k closed-road event will now be coming to Liverpool and taking over the city!
The 10k closed road event will give Liverpudlians a one-of-a-kind opportunity to don their running shoes and have fun seeing iconic city landmarks in a stunning winter wonderland setting.
The fun filled event, which takes place on Sunday 17th January 2016, starts at Liverpool’s Echo Arena where the winter fun will kick off in style with a brand new never seen before Winter Run feature – Snow Blast-Off! This exciting new start to the race will debut in Liverpool, forming an arch of snow over each wave of runners as they head off for the first time on the Winter Run course for more fun.
Runners will head off from the Echo Arena, and be treated early on with spectacular views of Liverpool Cathedral. Soon after that it’s down the strand and past the iconic Liver Building, one of Liverpool’s ‘Three Graces’, which makes Liverpool’s waterfront one of the most recognisable in the world. As runners continue on their 10k mission they will pass the Cunard Building, before looping back and taking in a stretch alongside the famous waterfront. After passing the Albert Dock and Tate Liverpool it’s back to the Echo Arena, where the famous Polar Bears and his friends will be waiting to give out warm friendly hugs.
The 10k course will be packed full of exciting winter surprises that will entertain not only the runners but also the families and friends who come out to show their support. Liverpool will be transported into a winter wonderland with a giant Snow Zone, which boasts six industrial size cannons showering runners with snow. There will be enough winter fun to keep everybody’s spirits up both on and off the course.
This unique event is the perfect opportunity for people of all levels of fitness, but a particularly great event for Liverpudlians who are wanting to get fit for 2016 and start the New Year with a bang whilst raising money for Cancer Research UK.
The Cancer Research UK Winter Run is organised by Human Race – the UK’s largest organiser of running, cycling and triathlon events.
Nick Rusling, CEO of Human Race, said: “We are extremely excited to be bringing Winter Run to Liverpool for the first time. It is a truly amazing city to host this unique winter event which will see Liverpool turned into a winter wonderland.
“This 10k event really is like no other, giving people the opportunity to see the sights of Liverpool on closed-roads and get up close to iconic landmarks. Not only will it be a great day for the runners, but it will be a fantastic day for supporters, who I’m sure will add to the already fun atmosphere of this great event.”
Clive Sanders, Head of Events at Cancer Research UK, said; “Fundraising events like The Winter Run Series are vital for raising life-saving funds to help beat cancer sooner and uniting men and women of all ages and abilities in the fight against the disease. We’re delighted that The Winter Run is coming to Liverpool for the first time this year, giving people the chance to give cancer the cold shoulder.
Assistant Mayor and cabinet member for culture, leisure and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said “We’re delighted to be hosting the Cancer Research UK Winter Run in 2016 and it’s yet another popular addition to our ever-growing sporting calendar. There is always a huge amount of demand to be part of an activity taking place at Liverpool’s iconic waterfront, and with those healthy New Year’s resolutions still fresh in people’s mind, this new charity event for the city should prove popular.”
