Woolton blooms again

Woolton Village has swept the board in the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom competition.

Woolton in Bloom won the Gold Award in the Urban Community Category, was the Category Winner – for the Best Urban Community in the UK and horticultural manager Kerry Peacock won the Community Champion Award.

It has now been nominated to enter the UK Champion of Champions Category in 2014

The Judges commended Woolton, which was one of five nominees for a Horticulture Award, for its impressive and colourful flowers and sustainable planting. was.  The RHS theme of the Year was ‘Edible Gardening’ and the village was highly praised for the many beds and tubs of edible plants grown in areas accessible to the public. Attention to conservation and wildlife preservation were also commended.

More accolades were awarded for its community involvement. Judges praised the commitment of all Bloom Members, who plant and care for the displays all year round and raise the funds to make this possible. Woolton in Bloom 2

They commended the inclusion of all sections of the community, young and old, especially the involvement of schools and young people on Duke of Edinburgh assignments, and the youngsters of the Boys and Girls Brigade, who grew and cooked their own vegetables. 

Special Art Features – the Coronation memorial Crown, Horse and Cart and Fork-to-Fork Sculptures – were also admired.

Woolton was the only Urban Village to receive a Gold Award and is exceptional for having won Gold Medals in two RHS Categories.  The awards were presented to Kerry Peacock and Councillor Barbara Mace, Chair, of Woolton in Bloom. 

Kerry Peacock said “The aim of Woolton in Bloom has always been to be the best.  Volunteers work tirelessly to make it a great place for everyone who lives, works or visits Woolton. 

“This year we celebrated the Queen’s Coronation with a planted a 3D crown so it is especially good for Woolton to be crowned the Best Urban Community in the UK.” 

Councillor Mace added “For the past 11years Woolton in Bloom has brought together the whole community working together to improve the village in which we live and work.  The accolades year on year is testament to their dedication and hard work – this year is the pinnacle of their success and I am especially delighted that Kerry has been recognized for her vision, inspiration and leadership of the whole team.”
