Celebrating National Apprenticeship Week: Brian’s journey into a new Career

This week, we’re celebrating National Apprenticeship Week (9–15 February), highlighting the value apprenticeships bring to individuals, businesses, and communities.

One of the many inspiring stories across Liverpool City Council is that of Brian Wallace, an Accounting Technician Apprentice.Originally from Northern Ireland, Brian moved to Liverpool to study teaching before realising it wasn’t the right path for him.

“I wanted a career that offered progression and the chance to learn while working, and the apprenticeship programme gave me exactly that,” Brian said.

After exploring opportunities on the Council website, Brian joined the Accounting Technician apprenticeship, working across two Transactional Services teams. With support from colleagues, he built technical skills, strengthened his confidence, and completed his Level 3 Apprenticeship, securing a permanent Finance Assistant role. He’s now progressing through his Level 4 AAT qualification.

“The support from my team has been incredible. I’ve gained qualifications, experience, and a clear career path, all while preparing for a big year personally, as I’m getting married in May!”

Liverpool City Council’s Apprenticeship First approach has helped bring 57 new-hire apprentices into the organisation, contributing to a total of 224 active apprentices across areas such as business administration, accounting, and data analysis.
