As part of its commitment to improving road safety and supporting active travel, Liverpool City Council is working in partnership with Cycling UK to deliver a series of free “Dr Bike” drop-in sessions across the city, to the end of September.
The sessions give cyclists the opportunity to have their bike checked by experts at no cost, helping ensure it is safe and roadworthy. Participants can also pick up practical advice on cycling safely and sharing the road with other users.
A full list of upcoming Dr Bike sessions is available on the Council website.
As well as promoting the benefits of cycling the Council is also highlighting the importance of road safety for everyone using the city’s streets, encouraging road users to familiarise themselves with the Highway Code.
Whether walking, wheeling, cycling or driving, everyone has a role to play in creating a safer environment for all.
The Code recognises that pedestrians, cyclists and other vulnerable road users should be given priority, while those operating larger vehicles have the greatest responsibility for reducing danger on the roads.
Drivers can help improve safety by:
- Staying alert and anticipating potential hazards
- Looking out for cyclists, particularly at junctions, roundabouts and when overtaking
- Avoiding distractions and remaining focused on the road
- Giving adequate space, allowing at least 1.5 metres when overtaking cyclists and e-scooter users at speeds of up to 30mph, and more at higher speeds
- Using the Dutch Reach when opening vehicle doors to help spot approaching cyclists and pedestrians. This involves reaching over to open car doors from the inside using the hand furthest away. The movement naturally twists your body to look over your shoulder, giving you the chance to check your blind spot.

Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, said: “Cycling is a great way to get out and enjoy Liverpool by bike, whether you’re travelling locally or exploring new parts of the city.
“The free Dr Bike sessions are a fantastic opportunity for cyclists to get expert advice and a professional safety check, helping them make the most of the warmer months.
“By looking out for one another and sharing the road responsibly, we can help make Liverpool’s streets safer for everyone.”
