Liverpool City Council has transformed the memorial garden at Springwood Crematorium, creating a more welcoming and comforting space for families to remember and celebrate the lives of babies and children.
Designed as a peaceful place for reflection, the garden has been refreshed with a new woodland themed design, featuring bespoke signage, decorative wildlife imagery and a redesigned memorial plaque wall.
Families can spend time to reflect and remember their loved ones in the garden using new brightly coloured benches and a picnic area.
As part of the improvements, a dedicated area has been created where the ashes of babies, cared for by Liverpool Women’s Hospital, who lost their lives before 24 weeks can be scattered. This is the first time that these families have had a dedicated memorial space of their own.
The garden will be open to the public at all times.
To mark the reopening, a short commemorative service will take place at 10am on Thursday 1 October.
Delivered in partnership with the Good Funeral Company, the service is open to anyone who would like to attend.
Afterwards, guests will have the opportunity to visit the new space and take some time to reflect.
Refreshments will be available on the day, weather permitting.
Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods and Streetscene said: “The loss of a baby or child is something no family should ever have to experience, and we hope that this space will provide comfort to those who are grieving.
“The memorial garden has been redesigned to create a more peaceful and welcoming space for families to remember their loved ones in their own way.
“This garden will provide a lasting place of remembrance that will support families for years to come.”
