Liverpool’s School Improvement Team have won a top award for their work to deliver foreign languages to primary age children.
Leading publisher and provider of French and Spanish children’s language learning resources, La Jolie Ronde Languages for Children, awarded them their Primary Languages Prize at the recent European Language Label Awards 2013.
The Liverpool team’s Primary Modern Foreign Languages Project is a long-running and extensive project which began in 2000, offering a comprehensive service of teaching, training and support to enable primary schools to deliver Modern Foreign Languages.
The team provide high quality teaching of French, German, Spanish and Mandarin to 85 primary schools across the city as well as 14 Centres of Excellence.
The Awards are a Europe-wide initiative launched to recognise creative and innovative ways to improve the quality of language teaching, to date over 1,600 projects, in 30 countries across Europe, have been recognised since 1999. The CfBT Trust is the UK co-ordinator of the Awards.
Marketing Manager, for La Jolie Ronde, Mala Henry commented: “The Liverpool team has shown outstanding commitment year on year to this long-running project. Schools benefit from their dedication and excellent programme of teaching, training and support.”
Councillor Jane Corbett, Cabinet member for education, said: “This is fantastic recognition of the work of the team who do such a great job in getting children to learn another language at an early age.
“Being able to speak a second language is a huge asset and by teaching it when children are younger we are helping them develop a habit that lasts a lifetime, as well as educating them about life in different countries.”
The Project also received the European Language Label’s Award for Outstanding Contribution to Languages Award which was presented to the Team by Steven Fawkes , Chair of the ELL judging panel.
