Budding book worms are being encouraged to exercise their imaginations and take part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge.
Liverpool City Council’s Libraries team is inviting families across the city to take part in The Reading Agency’s 2025 Summer Reading Challenge, where children can explore the magical bond between storytelling and the natural world with this year’s theme: Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors.
Launching on Saturday 5 July in all 15 Liverpool libraries, the challenge welcomes children aged 4–11 to visit their local library, discover new books, and enjoy a season bursting with imagination, fun, and outdoor inspiration.
With enchanting illustrations by award-winning artist Dapo Adeola, Story Garden opens the gate to a world of tales, creatures, and nature-themed adventures. Children can collect free activity packs, join in nature-inspired events, and borrow specially chosen books — all designed to keep them curious, active, and engaged with reading throughout the summer holidays.
There will be a suggested booklist including picture books, early readers and middle grade titles, along with several dyslexia-friendly books. As they progress through the challenge, youngsters can collect special stickers and rewards..

The Summer Reading Challenge is organised by The Reading Agency and is now in its 26th year. In 2024, the Challenge reached nearly 600,000 children and inspired over 100,000 new library memberships across the UK.
