LGBT financial recognition scheme

Those affected by the historic ban on serving in the Armed Forces only have two months to submit their application.

Between 1967 and 2000, LGBT people were banned from serving openly in the UK armed forces. Many of those affected were left with long-term damage to their careers and mental health after being dismissed.

In 2023 the Government committed to restorative measures. Amongst those announced was this scheme, launched in December 2024.

Compensation awards vary dependent on impact, but there is a £50,000 flat payment for veterans who were dismissed, discharged or forced to resign due to the ban.

The scheme has a two-year window within which applications must be submitted, which closes on 12 December 2026.
