Liverpool City Council takes control of essential services

Liverpool City Council will tomorrow (1 November) transfer vital frontline services, including waste collection, street cleansing and parks maintenance, into its direct control.

These services were previously operated by Liverpool Streetscene Services Ltd. (LSSL), which delivered essential services for the city as well as commercial contracts across the region.

They will now be managed in-house by the council, marking a major step in its commitment to delivering a cleaner, greener city.

Residents will continue to receive the same day-to-day services across the city, with no changes to bins collections or with the process to report cleansing, tree or waste issues.

The move was originally agreed at a Cabinet meeting last year in response to feedback from a residents’ survey where many respondents highlighted keeping Liverpool clean as a priority.

In response, the Council agreed to bring approximately 700 staff from LSSL in-house to allow for greater flexibility and control in making the wide-ranging improvements necessary.

Council Leader, Councillor Liam Robinson said: “We have listened closely to feedback from residents and have taken on board the issues that matter the most.

“We know that creating a cleaner, greener city for everyone is a high priority and insourcing staff from LSSL will provide us with opportunities to drive innovation and efficiency across a number of services.

“Staff at LSSL have always provided exceptional service for residents and businesses and having them as part of the Council will allow us to build and develop this in the future.”

Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins, Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods and Streetscene said: “This is a really positive step forward for the city. By bringing these services in-house, we’re strengthening our ability to deliver improvements that residents want to see.

“Our frontline teams play a vital role every single day, and this move gives us the tools to better support them and invest in the services that matter most to our communities.”
