Lord Mayor writes to express city’s sorrow at the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh

Liverpool’s Lord Mayor, Councillor Anna Rothery, has written to The Queen to convey the city’s condolences following the death of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.

The private letter to Her Majesty follows the opening of a virtual Book of Condolence, which has been signed by hundreds of people.

Councillor Rothery said: “We have had many messages paying tribute to Prince Philip and expressing sorrow at his death.

“On behalf of the people of the city, I have now written to Her Majesty to pass on our condolences at this sad time.”

The Royal couple were regular visitors to Liverpool, most recently in 2016.

Union flags at key council buildings including the Town Hall and St George’s Hall remain at half-mast.

The Book of Condolence can be signed here.
