Update on Speke Hall Road highways improvement works

Liverpool City Council would like to thank everyone for their patience while works have progressed on Speke Hall Road and the surrounding area.

We appreciate that this work has been going on for some time and can confirm that it is due to be completed by the end of this month.

Since the works started in March, Aureos, working on behalf of the Council has:

  • Removed old traffic lights and traffic islands to make way for new lights
  • Removed trees that were identified as having ash dieback, a highly destructive fungal disease that kills ash trees. All trees will be replaced.
  • Installed new housing for traffic light cables underground
  • Completed drainage repairs at the junction with Hillfoot Road
  • Resurfaced large parts of Speke Hall Road
  • Carried out emergency repairs to a hole under the road surface that measured 13m long and 2m wide

All that is left to do is the final resurfacing of the road, which will be delivered in a phased approach to minimise disruption.

We’ve worked with local businesses to manage these periods of disruption and ensure access needs are met.

To allow for this to happen, there will be a series of overnight closures between 8pm and 6am on:

  • Monday 6 and Monday 13 July, Barford Road to Hillfoot Avenue Junction
  • Monday 6, Tuesday 7, Monday 13, and Tuesday 14 July, Hillfoot Avenue Junction
  • Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 15 July, Speke Hall Road, north of Hillfoot Avenue Junction
  • Wednesday 8 and Wednesday 15 July, Barford Road to Hillfoot Avenue Junction
  • Wednesday 8 and Thursday 16 July, Hillfoot Avenue (and Triumph way on the 16 July)
  • Thursday 9 and Friday 17 July, Triumph Way, Asda/McDonalds, Speke Hall Road, and the north side of the Hillfoot Avenue Junction
  • Friday 10 July, the south side of the Hillfoot Avenue Junction

People can follow along with the final series of works via the Publiq app.

Separately, surveys are being carried out on the junction Woolton Road and Menlove Avenue.

Lane closures in this area are in place to keep our staff safe while they assess the area ahead traffic light upgrades. This upgrade will take place after the improvement works have been completed and will result in a temporary road closure.

Signed diversions will remain in place during the remainder of these works, and all closures will be removed at the earliest opportunity.
