Liverpool families are being encouraged to check their children’s vaccination records this summer and make sure they are up to date with their MMR or MMRV vaccinations, which protect against measles, mumps, and rubella.
Children aged 12 months to 11 years who have missed an MMR or MMRV vaccination can catch up through their GP practice, while school-aged childrens and young people who have missed vaccinations offered through school can attend one of a series of immunisation clinics being held across the city during the summer holidays.
Health professionals are reminding parents and carers that it is never too late to catch up on missed vaccinations. Measles is highly infectious and can spread quickly among unvaccinated children, but two doses of the MMR vaccine provide the best protection.
The summer clinics are designed to help children and young people who may have missed their school vaccinations for any reason, whether through illness, moving schools, family commitments, or uncertainty about attending previous appointments. Families will have the opportunity to discuss any concerns with trainer healthcare professionals in a supportive environment.
For many parents, deciding to attend a vaccination appointment after missing one can come with mixed feelings. Local mum Vicki, whose daughter recently caught up on a missed vaccination, said:
“I was nervous because there is so much information online and I wasn’t sure what to believe. The nurses took the time to listen to my concerns and explain everything clearly. I’m really glad we went ahead because I feel reassured knowing my daughter is protected.”
Another Liverpool parent, Dan, said he delayed booking after his son missed an appointment during a particularly busy period for the family.
“Life got in the way and before I knew it, we’d missed the appointment. I worried I’d left it too late, but the team were really understanding. The process was quick and friendly, and it gave me peace of mind.”
Meanwhile, Adam, whose child recently received a catch-up vaccination, encouraged other parents who may still be unsure to speak to healthcare professionals.
“I had questions and wasn’t confident about what to do. Once I spoke with the nurses and got the facts, I felt much more comfortable. They didn’t pressure me; they simply gave me the information I needed to make the best decision for my child.”
Parents and carers who are unsure whether their child has received both doses of MMR or MMRV vaccine are encouraged to check their child’s Red Book, contact their GP practice, or speak to the School Aged Immunisations Team.

It’s not too late to catch up.
If your child is aged 12 months to 11 years, parents and carers should contact their GP practice about catching up on missed MMR or MMRV vaccinations.
Parents and carers of school-aged children and young people who have missed a vaccination offered through school can contact the School Aged Immunisation Team on 0151 295 3833 to book an appointment or discuss vaccination status.
