Liverpool Libraries and Information Services are inviting residents and visitors to discover the city’s rich social history this month through a programme of free events and exhibitions as part of Heritage Open Days 2026.
Running from 11 to 20 September, the programme has been developed in partnership with local organisations and will explore the stories, people and places that have helped shape Liverpool’s history.
As England’s largest festival of history and culture, Heritage Open Days shines a spotlight on the stories of ordinary people and the often-overlooked places and institutions that have shaped communities over generations.
In Liverpool, the programme will use this year’s national Heritage Open Days theme, Everyday Histories, to explore working-class experiences, local heritage, and community stories through exhibitions, workshops, and guided tours.
Among the highlights is the Liverpool Irish Oral History Workshop at Allerton Library on Monday 14 September. Delivered by The Sound Agents, the free drop-in session will invite people to share stories of their Irish heritage and contribute to Liverpool’s living history. Participants are encouraged to bring along photographs or keepsakes, with organisers particularly keen to hear from those with second and third-generation Irish connections.
Visitors can also take part in the Liverpool Record Office Heritage Trail, running from 11 to 19 September across libraries in Allerton, Kensington, Norris Green, Spellow and Toxteth. Created by the Liverpool Record Office at Central Library, the trail features archive displays showcasing objects and documents connected to the Everyday Histories theme, offering a unique glimpse into the lives of past generations.
Meanwhile, Toxteth Library will host George Garrett: Everyday Histories – Liverpool’s Working-Class Writer and Unsung Hero from 11 to 19 September. Presented by Writing on the Wall, the exhibition celebrates the life and legacy of the Liverpool writer, seafarer and social historian whose work documented the everyday experiences of working people. Staff from the organisation will be available on selected dates to speak with visitors about Garrett’s enduring contribution to the city’s cultural heritage.
A series of free heritage tours will also take place between 12 and 19 September at Liverpool Central Library, giving visitors will have the opportunity to learn more about the history of the iconic building, explore stories of the pottery workers who once worked in the surrounding area, and discover fascinating aspects of Liverpool’s heritage.
