Residents encouraged to ‘Know Your Numbers’ with free blood pressure checks across Liverpool

Liverpool residents are being encouraged to take a few minutes for their health during Know Your Numbers! Week starting on Monday 7 September by attending one of the free blood pressure check events taking place across the city.

High blood pressure affects millions of people across the UK, and it usually has no symptoms. Left untreated, it can increase the risk of serious health conditions including heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and dementia.

As part of Know Your Numbers! Week, Liverpool City Council’s Health and Wellbeing team will be offering free blood pressure checks and health advice at community venues across Liverpool. Residents can drop in without an appointment, speak to trained staff and learn more about reducing their risk of cardiovascular disease. You can also contact the team to ask for more information or book an appointment on 0151 351 3461 or email health@liverpool.gov.uk

Anyone aged 16 and over can use the SISU Health Stations in Garston and Alsop Lifestyles to have a free health check, 7 days a week.

If you are aged over 40, you can also get a free blood pressure check at your local pharmacy, and you may also be invited for an NHS Health Check at your GP practice. The NHS Health Check includes a blood pressure check, glucose and cholesterol tests to check your risk of diabetes and heart disease. Contact your GP Practice to ask about an appointment.

No matter how or where you go to have your blood pressure checked, you will be able to find out more about how to prevent and manage high blood pressure.

Councillor Harry Doyle, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Culture, said:
“Know Your Numbers! Week is a simple but incredibly important reminder that prevention starts with understanding your own health. High blood pressure often goes unnoticed, but it can have serious consequences if it is not identified and managed.

“These free community sessions make it easy for residents to get checked, speak to health professionals and access support. I would encourage anyone who has not had their blood pressure checked recently to take advantage of these events. It could be one of the most important health checks you ever have.”

Professor Matthew Ashton, Director of Public Health for Liverpool City Council, said:
“Many people living with high blood pressure are unaware they have it because there are often no warning signs or symptoms. That’s why checking your blood pressure regularly is so important.

“A blood pressure check takes just a few minutes, but it can provide vital information about your health and help prevent serious illness later in life.”

Residents are encouraged to attend the session most convenient for them. No appointment is required.
